This past Saturday, a group of friends and I finally decided to go see “Point Break Live!” at the Dragonfly in Hollywood and quite honestly, it was an hour and a half of pure entertainment. This show is basically a live interpretation of the movie Point Break, where each night they invite any willing participant up onstage to play the role of Johnny Utah, played originally by Keanu Reeves. Those “auditioning” for the role are all asked to do a serious of tests, including shouting “Jump off or Jerk Off!!” while doing jumping jacks. The audience then decides by applause (or screaming in my case) who they want to see as Johnny, and that poor sap gets beat-up, sprayed with water and fake blood and basically dragged around the stage for the remainder of the show. It’s hilarious. Really. The joke is that Keanu Reeves is such a terrible actor that anyone could feasibly play that role.

The “Cue Card Girl/PA”, played by the adorable Christi Waldon, leads Johnny through the performance by giving him his lines and setting him up for failure in the most comical way, of course. A talented group of actors portray the rest of the principle cast, and actor Tobias Jelinek is the definite stand-out for his highly amusing yet exagerated portrayal of Bohdi, originally played by the amazing Patrick Swayze. The latent homosexual overtones add to the comedy as they constantly put Johnny Utah in uncomfortable “positions”…literally.

A wonderful element of the show is that the actors interact with the audience. At the start of the show, you are strongly encouraged to buy the $1 “survival pac” which is filled with a plastic poncho and fake Point Break money. During the surfing scenes and shoot-out scenes, the ponchos become handy as they spray the audience down with water, lotion and ALOT of fake blood!

When they’re robbing the bank, they come out in president’s masks (just like the movie) and actually run through the audience and throw you down to the ground while holding fake guns yelling at you to “Stay Down!”

If you are a fan of Point Break, you seriously have got to go see this show! And even if you’re not, you will definitely still have a great time because it’s loud, fun, obscene and so damn funny. Word to the wise, BUY THE SURVIVAL KIT!
