The Original Alice in Wonderland Film – 1903

Posted by Tamara | Posted on 05-03-2010

This is really cool. The first-ever film version of Lewis’ Carroll’s tale, Alice in Wonderland, has been recently restored and it’s amazing to see how advanced the film was just 8 years after the medium was even created.

Directed by Cecil Hepworth, the film originally had a run-time of 12 minutes, the longest film produced at that time, and starred his wife as the Red Queen, himself as the Frog Footman and the family cat as the Cheshire Cat.

Um…this is kind of amazing. I’ll be the first to tell you that I LOVED Avatar. I was thoroughly entertained (visually) for the entire film. I watched the “Behind the Scenes: Avatar” and it was really cool to see how James Cameron made this film really come to life. The whole process was completely fascinating. A friend forwarded the “Original” breakdown for Avatar (and Pocahontas) to me and I just had to share. Seriously, kind of amazing right?!

For all my New York peoples, beginning Nov. 22 (my birthday!) the MoMA is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the art of one of my favorite directors, Tim Burton. I implore (yes, implore) you to go and check it out. I had the chance to see a mini-exhibition of some of his work a few years back and it was really amazing. It’s times like this that make me really miss NYC, so go for me and let me know how it is :)

While we are on the topic of one of my favorite directors, he happens to be coming out with a little film called Alice in Wonderland. I mentioned my excitement for this film back in June, and now that the poster has been revealed, I can’t wait!! Counting down the days for this one….
